Saturday Dec 28, 2013 - Terry attempts new fashion

John and Terry get close while Terry models his head wear. I'm not sure this is going to result in a new fashion and it certainly isn't approved cycling gear!

Saturday - Dec 28, 2013 - last ride of the year

We enjoyed breakfast at the South Beach Cafe as part of Ken's "Alternate Freo Ride"...our last Ride_Group ride for 2013. A busy cafe that offered great value for money ("We'll be back!!").

Sunday Dec 15, Wheelie Good Day

Hi All......Christmas is getting very close!
I hope some of you can be available to attend the event I have created  (see image below or click here to download/view poster).
It will be great to see any of your faces on the day, bringing a child with their decorated bike would be great.
Do not stress though, just bring yourself and have a coffee(cafe on site) and even picnic if you like.
If you are brave you will bring and decorate your bike too! (O.K.  O.K.  ...............I will bring mine!)

Hope to see you.....cheers,
Nigel

Saturday Dec 7, 2013 - Darlings To Darlington?

Ride Organiser: Francis Vivier
Organiser's email: francis.vivier@iinet.net.au
Organiser's mobile telephone no: 0403 236 439
Ride style: Social
Terrain: Some Hills
Estimated Distance: 45 to 50 kms
Start Time: 7:30 am & 8:00 am

Start Place: Narrows South; Maylands Railway Station

We will travel to Bassendean taking the back roads of Ashfield and Bassendean, over the river in Guildford, then through Bellevue, Koongamia, Boya, and we will climb Coulston Rd to arrive in Darlington to have breakfast. I am still deciding where to have our coffee break. We could visit a couple of art galleries.

For the return, we will go down via Glen Rd, Victor Rd and Clayton Rd to arrive in Helena Valley. To continue via Hazelmere, Guildford, we will travel along the cycle path through Bassendean, Bayswater and finally Maylands.

I estimate the distance to be about 45 to 50 kms with one major hill, but no very steep bit! ... famous last words.

Are we going to attract some of the climbers back to this ride?

Note I will start from Maylands

S U M M E R    T I M E    S T A R T

The "Mediocrity Ride" is scheduled again but don't confuse the fact we're doing this ride fairly often with it being popular!

Alan Perkins first introduced the "Mediocrity Ride" in April 2012. It was, well "ok" (according to half the group). Some said the ride was really good ...but that was thanks only to the weather. Others have said that the weather and the people made it ok. No one has attributed anything overly special to the actual route. Some said the ride was perhaps, "possibly repeatable". So we've decided to repeat it.

The "Mediocrity Ride" features ideas carefully pilfered from other people, and offers something to most. It is the ride rated "OK" by 5 out of 10 people! If you're excited about this ride ...DON'T BE ...you've missed the point!

Starting at Narrows - Southside, the "Mediocrity Ride" is a leisurely 50 km tour. The terrain is mainly flat with some gentle hills (ie "Ken friendly"); uses a mixture of cycle paths and roads, and intersperses faster stretches with slower, more technical sections.

Alan tells me that this time around he is thinking of re-routing the "Mediocrity Ride" to run it in the reverse direction. It will have a different coffee stop and everything: but don't worry - it'll still be really average!

Alan anticipates an 8:00 am start from the Narrows (South side), with the "over achievers" having the option of a 7:30 departure from Maylands.

Scheduling weekly rides

As you're aware I haven't ridden since early August, mainly due to back problems but I'm quite happy to keep publishing rides for each week.

I would, however, prefer not to have to guess which rides the group would like to do. We've always tried to schedule rides based on suggestions from the group and consensus so it is far better if suggestions are considered, by those on the ride, for the following weekend and a ride decided on (and an email sent to me so I can publish that ride).

When Jenny or Terry are riding there is usually more thought and communication about the next ride... but when they're not riding I'm often left guessing!

Put it in a sock!

You've all heard the "put a sock in it". Now it is worth considering "put it in a sock".

The former was of course a reference to putting a sock in the mouth of someone who wouldn't shut up. The latter is a reference to a new idea where by you put your bike wheels in a "sock" to avoid dirty wheels making a mess in your car, apartment, office place etc.

Congratulations - we have a winner!

In every competition there is a winner... some times the win results from a fluke. Sometimes a short burst of concentrated effort gets the competitor across the line in a tough competition.

Ride_Group members have had the opportunity to win our very own competition but our eventual winner has been consistently outstanding and really deserved to win the competition many times over. Nobody else came close ..it was really a one horse race.

John Neville was announced as the winner just prior to our Mountain Bike ride on the Heritage Trail last Saturday.

John has suggested he'll collect his prize (buying each rider on a Saturday ride a drink of their choice at our morning stop) when we include an appropriate (better, more expensive?) venue.

Please join me in congratulating John.

Will John chase the next prize?

As a refresher here are the competition "frequently asked questions":-

FAQ

Q: Is it really free entry?
A: Yes. Absolutely free to qualifying Ride_Group members.

QRide_Group members only?
A: Yes. Only members of the Ride_Group can qualify for free entry.

Q: How do I know if I'm a member of the Ride_Group?
A: Members of the Ride_Group get Ride_Group blog entries via email.

Q: How do I enter?
A: Turn up for a planned Ride_Group ride without letting us know.

Q: When is my first opportunity to enter?
A: September 22, 2012

Q: Letting us know?
A:  Riders who follow Ride_Group etiquette let the ride organiser or qroup know via email that they're planning to ride.

Q: How do I win?
A: Two entries in succession (two weeks in a row) and you've won!

Q: What is the prize?
A: You buy every other rider the drink of their choice.

Q: Are there bigger prizes?
A: Yes. Win for a second time and you buy breakfast for every other rider.

We'll meet and start at the tennis courts in Darlington then ride down the track to Pechey Park then up the track North of Great Eastern Highway up to Sawyers Valley. This a fairly easy, steady climb. We'll cross the highway and return on the south side with a finish at Darlington for coffee / food.

For those of you who haven't done much mountain bike riding this is an excellent way to get accustomed to MTB rides.

Whether you're a member of the Ride_Group or a guest please let us know if you're planning on joining us for the ride. (Members - remember our ongoing competition!)

Cyclo Sportif - Swan Valley - Sunday, 30 June 2013

I know it is short notice (registration closes on Tuesday) but is there any interest in doing next Sunday's Cyclo Sportif?

I will be doing the Cyclo Sportif myself along with work colleagues (Team name: CFC Group - Wolf Pack A).

A team needs to comprise a minimum of 4 riders. See: Cyclo Sportif - Swan Valley - June 30

While I've never ridden in the Cyclo Sportif previously I have been to the WA Track Cycling Grand Prix a number of times and it is a great event.

The Cyclo Sportif finishes with lunch at the Velodrome and viewing of the Grand Prix.

If there is interest let me know and I'll register a "Ride_Group" team. Of course, those who would prefer can do it as an individual.

Meet 2010 World Track Cycling Champion - Sarah Kent - Sunday 7th July

Meet Champion Sarah Kent - Sunday 7th July

Come along and meet 2010 World Track Cycling Champion Sarah Kent. Sunday July 7th 12.30 to 2.30 at Dome 167 St Georges Tce, Perth.

Sarah will talk to us about her cycling trip which she Navigated 1500 kilometres of terrain through four African countries – with just a few camping supplies on the back of a bicycle - may be far from the racing track which saw Sarah Kent become a world champion. But she says it proved to be one of the most rewarding challenges in her career.

Her goal was to raise $13,000 to buy 100 new bikes for children who have no other mode of transport to access basics such as schools, hospitals and water supplies in their local community.

Ask her any cycling related questions and get your photo taken with Sarah. Cost is $5 each. This money will go to Sarah to pay for her time. Payment due on arrival to Cathi Dixon. Come and have lunch at Dome too. Toby has offered some of his cafe space to get this project up and running.

Please message me (Cathi Dixon) on facebook or phone or txt or email me that you are coming. Limited numbers so pedal pedal pedal and let me know ASAP. For more information contact Cathi on 0438 765 043 or Catherine.dixon4@hotmail.com.

Saturday June 15, 2013 - Roe Highway Jaunt

Ride Organiser: Robert Hind
Organiser's email: Robert@robert-hind.com
Organisers mobile tel: 0417 934 502
Ride style: Social
Ride type: Road
Terrain: Mainly flat
Estimated Distance:
60 kms?
Start Place: Maylands Railway Station, Narrows (Sth Side)
Start Time: 8:00 am, 8:30 am

It is some time since we've done the Roe Highway (bike path) jaunt.

Normally we would ride along the bike path to Orrong Road and then all the way back for a long and at times fast ride. This time Jenny has researched a different route so that we don't return all the way along the Roe Highway bike path.

From Orrong Road return on Roe Hwy path to Railway Pde exit. Follow railway to Oats St, then Oats/Gabriel to Abernethy, Fairbrother, Belgravia, Grandstand. Cross the river and follow the river via Maylands to East Perth, Causeway and Narrows.

We can stop at Tomato Lake in Oats St (have to check the menu first) or next to Tranby House or at East Perth in the inlet just south of the Windan Bridge.

Saturday June 8, 2013 - Two Valleys ride

Ride Organiser: Francis Vivier
Organiser's email: francis.vivier@iinet.net.au
Organiser's mobile telephone no: 0403 236 439
Ride style: Social
Terrain: Includes Hill Sections
Estimated Distance: 60 kms+
Start Point: Maylands
Start Time: 8:30 am

*** Please note - Francis is the Ride Organiser for this ride ***
*** please notify him if you're planning to join the ride ***

I propose to travel on the cycle path from Maylands to Bassendean, then through Guildford by the river. However this time we will come on the other side of the Guildford bridge to ride in some back streets of Guildford towards Hazelmere. Travel along Bushmead road, then Midland Rd to find Ridge Hill road. Yes there is a good hill there – apparently less painful than coming from the Helena Valley, and yes it will be hard for me.

Then Scott Street, Clayton Rd, to go under Gt Eastern Hwy to make our way though Swan View, to cycle a bit in the Swan Valley, via Toodyay Rd, Campersic Rd, then Lennard Street and Gt Northern Hwy for our coffee stop at the Coffee Hut.

Return trip via Barrett Street, to West Swan Rd, Benara Rd, Lord Street and finally join the cycle path in Bassendean to finish in Maylands.

Saturday May 25, 2013 - Mediocrity Ride

Ride Organiser: Alan Perkins
Organiser's email:  alanperkins2000@yahoo.com
Organisers mobile tel: 0401 303 283
Ride style: Social
Terrain: Mainly Flat
Estimated Distance: 50 kms+
Start Point: Maylands, Narrows - South Side
Start Time: Maylands 8:00, Narrows 8:30

**** Note - Alan Perkins is the Ride Organiser ****
**** please let Alan know if you plan to join this ride ****

Alan anticipates an 8:30 am start from the Narrows (South side), with the "over achievers" having the option of a 8:00 departure from Maylands.
